Mixed Media Art Journal Video-"Rush"

A look at part of how I created the mixed media piece entitled "Rush".  I worked primarily in watercolours, but with a bit of pen work and a bit more pencil work to create the details the way that I wanted them.  This piece started off as a way to test my new Letraset AquaMarkers as well as my Peerless Watercolour sets. But as she developed I found myself falling in to a rhythm with her...swooping from one part of her to another.  Feeling the colour rather than forcing it.  Then as I added the chartreuse background (pictured but not in the video - sorry!) I fell in love with her lovely pink 'do and the flow of the ink.  This rhythm is why art has become so meditative for me. What do you do to breathe? Is there something that you do to act as meditation without actually meditation? I would love yo hear about it!

Utterance

"Utterance"           24"x38"
This was an incredible journey to create a commissioned piece for a new client. And oh, what joy to work on this! Jean already knew that she liked my previous piece "Was it Yesterday", but wanted something large to fill a niche wall in her house. When we sat down to go through some ideas, I took notes about all the different things she likes, has experienced, has loved and done. And then I played in layers of goodness with text flowing over the canvas between bursts of spray paint. And "Utterance" was born.  It is always hard to let pieces go, but in this case, there was great joy in it as I knew she was off to be loved.
Enjoy!

Starlight

A whisper in the moonlight. A glimpse in to the future or a breath of the past.
A notion of time passing.
This is Starlight.

She has my heart - I hope she finds yours.

Sapphire

She started as a simple sketch...a journal page.
Perhaps a design under a transfer.
Play with some watercolour...wait -
that's working...more colour...more paint...
Copics and ink and water soluble oil pastels...the layers grow.
Luminescent eyes that shine with inner light.
More Copics...more refinement.
I present Sapphire.
She is how I regained my sanity a bit today.

"She Saw Her Past"

I just released a new painting to the world.  It can be viewed and purchased on my Etsy site.  Or just enjoyed here! As a side note....I think it's interesting that I keep wanting to call it "She Saw Her Future"...maybe there's more to her story than I thought...
I love the vintage photos and bits of an old film.

An Awesome Morning!

I just had the most awesome morning visiting with an old friend that I haven't seen in over a year.  It was a chance to talk about life and catch up and share art talk.  I love time like this.  I come away feeling so refreshed and energized. There is something so fantastic about sharing where you are at and talking about what inspires.  I loved it! And she brought me some lovely little treats from the Philippines.  I love them all (eating the amazing dried mangoes as I write this), but my favourite, because of how creative it is, is the coolest little change purse made out of recycled drink containers. I love this up-cycling - what incredible ingenuity.
And to make my morning even more fabulous, this lovely lady - Fortune 6, as well as a "Pinkie" got to go home with her as well. I am so grateful for the support and connection with fantastic friends.
Thanks for a great morning Annika!

"Pinkie" fund raiser for Breast Cancer

I am so excited about this! I have 8x10 prints of my lovely "Pinkie" print available for a mere $25. These would be a super sweet gift for the little valentine in your life. And to make it better, a full 50% of the sale will go to support breast cancer. This is personal for me (as it is for too many people). I have had MANY people in my life affected by breast cancer and recently lost an old friend. Pinkie can be purchased in person at Gravity Kidz on 130th ave or by emailing me. It is also available on my Etsy site for those out of town! She is only available this way until Valentines Day, so get her now!
I heart Pinkie!!

Lucky

This is another piece in my "Pretty Girls" series.  I am entranced with these colours together-the blues and greens all layered together with some vintage text...swoon.. It is mixed media finished with encaustic.  Don't you just love the smell of beeswax?  It is such a comfort smell to me-I could paint with it all day.

Bliss

I just finished my latest painting "Bliss". She has already found a home, but I still wanted to share. I especially love the shiny glass beads on her dress and the layers of wax that reveal her. Thanks for looking!
