Crissy Curzon

Love love love the look that Crissy has going on!  She's a singer with a ton of pizazz which made her shoot an absolute blast! Though somehow, I forgot to get her to sing for me...not sure how that happened!
Here are her final images...I love that we played with something a bit different for her - should make her stand out!

It Has Been Crazy!

Crazy weird, challenging, busy, intense....so I have gone M.I.A. for awhile...sorry about that! My dad had heart surgery out of the blue and he is doing really well on the recovery side of things now, but it seemed to throw everything else of track.  Isn't it amazing when your head is consumed by something, the time it takes to get it back?  The universe seemed to recognize that and cut me some slack on other things. So this week has been all about getting back on track and finding my mojo again.  I even got some much needed lair-organization started! My next few posts will be catching up on some of the cool projects I got to work on over the last couple of months.
Here is the first one that I did for the Norlien Foundation. What an amazing group of people working in an incredibly beautiful space. They needed some portraits added to their website to show the growth in staff they have had. They wanted me to match the format and overall look of their previous shots while bringing my own flavour to improve upon them. An interesting and challenging request that went very well.  Here are the new shots and check out their site to not only see the wonderful work that the foundation does, but also how the shots worked in with their existing portraits.

Wright Family

This past weekend was absolutely gorgeous. So add in to that a really nice family with a couple of awesome dogs and I had so much fun with this shoot! I love the colours in autumn. This year seems to have been so quick - not the usual gradual turn that we have.  Maybe it's because of the heat?  One of the things that I love about Fish Creek Park is that it is gorgeous ANY time of year.  I have never seen anything remotely unattractive down there.  So thanks for a fun day and enjoy this sneak peek of your images - I can't wait for you to see the rest!

New Journal Backgrounds

I just created a couple of art journal backgrounds that I love, so thought that I would share them here.  These feel like I am getting back to a stye that I was missing...like I had forgotten about it and left it behind in the name of every element needing to be mine.  Hand created.  There is something so peaceful about just flowing with images.  Cutting. Pasting.  Breathing. And out of that came a couple of pages that I can't wait to write all over.  That mean something to me.  I hope you enjoy!

Back to School Photo Tips

There's only one "first day of school" for every child, so capture the day accurately with extra special photos! Whether it's kindergarten, first grade, or any year thereafter, you'll want to preserve that special day forever... and here's how!
Tip 1: Plan ahead. From clothes to lunches to backpacks, there are many things to get together for that first day of school! Don't be scrambling for camera, batteries, and memory cards as you rush your child out the door... make sure you have those things ready beforehand! Hurried activities will only add stress, so the more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your child will be!
Tip 2: Be sensitive to your child’s emotions and needs. Preparing your child for the first day of school AND the first day of school photo is important. The additional stress of taking a photo before heading off to school might prove a bit taxing for your child. Its a good idea to talk about that first day of school photo beforehand with your child... knowing what to expect is a stress reliever for everyone!
Tip 3: Decide where and when will be the best place and time to take photos. If your child’s going off to school on the bus, waiting at the bus stop might be a great place to start! If you’re picking your child up after school, you might want to take the photo in front of the school. This can even work out better because the anxiety over the first day of school will have subsided.
Tip 4: Make it a tradition! The first day of school is a great time to chronicle, in photographs, the growth of your child.  Try taking their picture in front of the same tree or in the same pose each year, and frame or scrapbook all the images together to see their growth right before your eyes, from kindergarten to college!
Tip 5: Don’t forget to photograph those who may not be going off to school. -- younger children, friends, or even dad! The images of those watching can create some wonderful and completely spontaneous images!
Have a great school year and don't forget to keep taking pictures throughout the year!

Summer is fading and as I gear up for what will surely be an insanely busy fall, I came across these lovely pictures from last year that went unposted.  We have such unbelievably beautiful parks in Calgary to take advantage of.  Fish Creek will always be my favourite because it is stunning in any season.  I love the richness of the fall colours even after the leaves have come off of the trees. And I love the sparkle in the eyes of the girls as they cavort and hang out with their grandparents.  I will mourn the fading of the summer's heat.  But the tang of new fallen leaves brings nostalgia and grace to my world.  This year I will revel in the colours and crunch through leaves shed for another year.
How will you celebrate the coming of autumn?

Ashton and Alex

This is why I love being a photographer. A gorgeous summer day, a family that I have been so fortunate to work with a few times and beautiful children. There is nothing about this that feels like work! Even when Alex didn't want to be a part of...well...anything...there is always a way around it.  Playing airplane with his dad or walking with his grandmother brought smiles to his face.  And as always, I love the moments that capture ALL the moods of the day.  Here are a few of my faves from the shoot!

Back to School

Back to school is one of my favourite times.  It always feels like New Years to me...the true start of the new year. Everything feels like a fresh start and there is a certain energy in the air. As a student my favourite thing was to go shopping for school supplies. Woolco would have these huge bins of pens and paper and pencil crayons out.  The sheer multitude of stuff made me heady with delight! I loved the pencil cases and binders.  And the second I got home, I would dump the bags of stuff on to my bed and organize absolutely everything.
Then there was the nervous anticipation for the actual first day.  What should I wear?  A new outfit for sure...nothing too fancy, but something cool. Something that made me feel special. That new outfit feeling fades after the first week, but it was part of the fresh start.
Carter started Grade Two this week.  And at a brand new school on the other side of town.  She has been looking forward to this since we found out she would be attending in May.  But it still didn't come without a touch of apprehension for all of us...change is exhilarating and scary! She can't wait to go back...I love her courage and excitement.

Shadow and her Peeps!

We had such an awesome day in South Fish Creek with the lovely Shadow and all her people! No mosquitos - which is unheard of in August in Calgary, a bunch of sunshine and awesome people.  My idea of an awesome shoot.  And for those of you that remember, the lovely Susan (formerly of Chipperfield Photography) is in these shots as well! Hope you guys enjoy your sneak peek - can't wait for you to see the rest!

Cheryl Kroeker Shields

I met Cheryl last fall doing a promo shoot for "Storm Warning" for Company of Rogues.  We had a lot of fun that day, so I was excited when she called me to update her head shots.  I love how easily she connects and we had a blast doing this shoot as well!  Here are her two new shots to re-launch her career.  Break a leg Cheryl!

MacDonnell

For me, there is absolutely nothing better than working with kids and families that I have seen grow through the years.  I have known James and Emily since they were wee babes - long enough that I can say that and they aren't allowed to get mad at me!  I have seen them grow through all the different stages so far and I love that every year I get to capture that.  And that every year there is the "struggle" to get them to be together in a shot.  I know that deep inside they will be happy to have these shots when they are older.  Until then - Aunty Jen will just make it happen!

Love you guys and can't wait for the next shoot!

Crilly

A bit more catch up on some long overdue posts.  I'm embarrassed to admit that this one is from Christmas time.  It was such a pleasure to work with their family.  They take incredible care with her decorating and the whole house had such a lovely Christmas spirit. It had been years since they had done family portraits and they were in need of some updating.  Their girls are beautiful young women and everyone was so invested in making this shoot successful. Here are a few of their final images!

Dance

So we don't do the typical dance photos at our dance studio.  The background is bland and they take 30 seconds to photograph each girl - no time for personality! I should know - I did that work for a couple of years.  I appreciate how hard it is to photograph a couple of hundred dancers in a day.  Sheer economics dictate that kind of schedule.  That's why I'm so grateful that I can do Carter's shots in a different way. And she has a blast with it too! Enjoy!

Boston

Graduation is such a cool time and I love when I get to be a (small) part of celebrating that. Boston is a huge bike guy, competing on a regular basis, so I knew that we needed to include the bike in a lot of the shots.  After all - it is a part of the family!  Here are a few of our fave's from that day. Enjoy!

Tyler Horsey

Tyler is one of those cool people who transforms in front of the camera.  He has a fabulous ability to connect and it made him very interesting to shoot. Here are the final two shots!

Amy...and co.

One of the things I love the most about what I do, is watching families grow...and growing with them.  This is certainly the case with this lovely family.  I have been invited to photograph each of their beautiful children when they were about 8 months old and it is so cool to see each of them at a similar stage.  This family is so real and I love any time I get with them.
So without further ado, here's Amy!
