Calyx 28th Semi-Annual Art Exhibition and Sale

I am still a photographer!

And hopefully always will be.  In my soul, that's what I do.  I see light, both in the world and in people.  And I feel this desire to capture it.  I get immense satisfaction from going through those images and seeing the eyes connect. And even more satisfaction when my clients react the same way.  When I know that I have captures a moment for them that takes their breath away, makes them laugh. Or cry.Those are the moments that I live for.

So I had my own aha moment when a long time client asked me the other day if I had pulled away from photography, because I was doing so many paintings. That so surprised me because that isn't even on my radar. Painting is a side "art" to what I do in my career. It feeds a different part of me than photography does, but is still so intertwined in my heart.  When I am working on a painting, I am still seeing light - visualizing where it comes from, and then translating that to the canvas. More often than not, I am working vintage textures on to the page, incorporating old photos and telling a story. And the coolest part about all of this, is that people are responding to this work as well! I get to have the coolest job ever - creating images for people with my camera, paintbrush, computer and soul. I love that my days are so varied and that the projects are so interesting. I have worked on some SUPER cool framing ideas and have created custom prints for commercial clients.  I have brought old, damaged photos back to life and I have created memorial projects for loved ones who have passed.

My creativity goes far beyond the typical studio photographer.  I bring YEARS of seeing and experiencing life to the final work. So yes - I am still a photographer...and artist...and creative. I hope you will enjoy all the many different types of work that I will continue to post on here! Your feedback brings me so much satisfaction and I am so very appreciative of all the support I receive!

Copics and ink and water soluble oil pastels...the layers grow. 

Luminescent eyes that shine with inner light.

An Awesome Morning!

I just had the most awesome morning visiting with an old friend that I haven't seen in over a year.  It was a chance to talk about life and catch up and share art talk.  I love time like this.  I come away feeling so refreshed and energized. There is something so fantastic about sharing where you are at and talking about what inspires.  I loved it! And she brought me some lovely little treats from the Philippines.  I love them all (eating the amazing dried mangoes as I write this), but my favourite, because of how creative it is, is the coolest little change purse made out of recycled drink containers. I love this up-cycling - what incredible ingenuity.

 And to make my morning even more fabulous, this lovely lady - Fortune 6, as well as a "Pinkie" got to go home with her as well. I am so grateful for the support and connection with fantastic friends.

Nanton 2011

Evolution

I created a Fine Art piece from one of Jen and Mark's wedding shots for them.  But it never felt done.

I looked at it on and off for quite some time, but I couldn't figure out why it didn't feel done.  It just felt bland. Then today it hit me (of course only a couple of hours before Jen was to come pick up all her prints!) - there was no depth.  It was all very pretty but somehow bland.  Add in some beautiful warmth, texture, stains and it comes alive.  I am in love with this piece now - in fact, it's going up as a display piece because I am so enamored with it! There is something to be said for not rushing the creative process. That is one of the tough things about working to deadlines is that pieces don't always hav a chance to evolve organically.  Today, I am glad for the evolution of this piece.

New Art Blog and Site

So I know I have mentioned it before, but it is new and I want LOTS of people to see it!  My new Jen Chipperfield Art site is live and exciting! I LOVE the opening gallery with it's fabulous closeups.  But venture beyond that and there are galleries with different series, art journaling and more happening on the inside.  Please visit - leave a coment to let me know you were there! I can't tell you how much this new venture means to me! In the meantime, here is the latest piece, Mischief.

First Art Gallery Hanging

I was invited to hang some art on the community art wall in the McKenzie Towne Hall (40 Mckenzie Towne Blvd S.E.).  I thought this would be a good opportunity to launch some of my paintings instead of the photography. So if you are interested in seeing them live and in person, you can stop by and ask to see the art wall. If the door is closed, just ring the doorbell or knock - they are happy to let visitors in to see it!  And they are open until 9 every day, except Sunday which is 6.

 So far - I have had absolutely RAVE reviews, so I couldn't be more pleased. This is a piece that I created just for this show. She is called "Rodeo" and it is my largest painting to date at 20"x40".
